Insulated glass

Extremely important, and often overlooked.

When choosing thermal glass windows, it is important to consider whether they are double-paned, triple-paned and what technology they have; e.g., Float, Low-E or 4S smart technology. Most neglect the thickness of the overall glass, and thickness is one of the three factors that significantly affect the strength of insulation. The thicker the glass the better the thermal insulation and sound insulation, so every millimeter is important.

When choosing glass, pay attention to the:

  • technology it has
  • number of panes
  • total thickness
  • manufacturing process

Let us consider triple-paned glass, 36 mm thick, and triple-paned glass, 40 mm thick, that have the same technology and are identical in every respect except thickness. 36 mm thick glass will have 15% poorer thermal insulation than 40 mm thick glass. Specifically, 36 mm thick glass will have a value of (Ug) = 0.7 W/m2K, and 40 mm thick glass will have a value of (Ug) = 0.6 W/m2K.
The lower the (Ug) = value, the better the thermal insulation. We hope you have realized the importance of glass thickness and how sometimes a seemingly small difference actually makes an enormous difference; therefore, you should always pay attention to the overall thickness.
